The Best Pub Theatres in London

Posted on 13:02 by Unknown
The Gate Theatre in Notting Hill

Located in the Notting Hill area, The Gate Theatre is one of the best-known pub theatres in London, and notables including Jude Law, Sophie Okenedo and Stephen Daldry got their start there. The 70 seat black box theatre is dedicated exclusively to the work of both well-known and up and coming international playwrights. Box office
theatre tickets are available before performances, so get there early. Shows have a tendency to sell out at The Gate Theatre.

The Etcetera Theatre
The Etcetera Theatre, located above the Oxofrd Arms pub in Camden seats about 42 with a few extra seats open occasionally depending on the setup needed for the performance. The Etcetera hosts two shows per day Tuesday through Saturday. Usually focusing on up and coming actors and playwrights, the Etcetera is a great place to see some amazing theatre before the makers become stars.

The Old Red Lion Theatre
Directly above the Old Red Lion pub sits the Old Red Lion Theatre, one of the oldest remaining pub theatres in London. Instead of the usual seating found in pub theatres, the Old Red Lion lets guests spread out on cushioned leather benches, giving the Old Red Lion and intimate, unique feel. Hosting a mix of comedy, one-man shows and standard musicals and plays, the Old Red Lion is a unique venue that you must check out. There’s no box office at the Old Red Lion, so make sure you arrive early to get a good seat.

The Tabard Theatre
The Tabard theatre, located above the Tabard Pub in Turnham Green got a major facelift in 2011, making it one of the finest pub theatres in London. The 80 seat theatre hosts mostly new plays, showcasing new talent from all over the world with a focus on local London playwrights.

Theatre 503

Theatre 503 in Battersea is connected to the Latchmere pub, and is run by a small group of directors that premier their own work here. The five directors involved also invite rising stars producing their second or third play to premier at Theatre 503. Theatre 503 also hosts comedy nights throughout the week. Again, there’s no box office at Theatre 503, so arrive early.

The Hen and Chickens Theatre Bar

The Hen and Chickens Theatre Bar is a small, 53 seat black box theatre that hosts a range of comedy shows, plays, one-man shows and even musicals. Hen and Chickens has become known for its cutting-edge, boundary-blurring performances as well, and the crowd tends to be young and in the know. The Hen and Chickens is located directly across from the Highbury/Islington tube station, which makes getting there and having a few pints before the show a cinch.
